Today, in near windless, bright wintery sunshine, a small group of New Zealand sex workers and supporters had a small protest opposite the Chinese Embassy in Wellington in support of Ye Haiyan. I have attached some of the photos I took. The signs read "Sex Workers Rights Are Good for Everyone", and "Support for Sparrow , Ye Haiyan".
The signs were read by most of the drivers going past and the two police officers who attended. We showed the police the signs and the NSWP umbrella, which they thought looked really good. They mostly sat in their car after that, but were ready just in case someone started causing us trouble. We explained what it was about, and they wished us luck. Some passers-by also read the signs. One person asked what it was about and was told. He supported us. Some of the drivers sounded their horns in support.
Staff of the Embassy were visible at the window on the ground floor and first and second floors, but took a step back when they realised I was taking photos. They reappeared as I went down the path I was on to take the latter shots. One of the deputies arrived back just as we were about to leave, and read the signs before the car disappeared into the garage on the ground floor.
We all wish Ye Haiyan the best in this period, posting these to let her and other workers in china know that they are not forgotten about.
