Dear Colleagues,
Apologies for reposting this call, but we have only had 40 signatures and we need many more.
Denis Matveev is a harm reduction and human rights activist from Russia who works for the rights of PLHIV, drug users, and prisoners. He was recently arrested on a minor drug charge which may have been politically motivated. A statement from his lawyer states that the drugs were planted on him at the time of arrest. He has already been in detention for 2 months and at his trial in November could be sentenced to up to 15 years imprisonment.
Recently, President Dmitry Medvedev called for a change in national drug policy to focus on prosecuting major drug dealers drug users rather than on drug users. Russian harm reduction activists are working not only to help Denis, but to use this opportunity to propose alternative sentencing so rather than imprisonment, those convicted of drug related charges could instead undergo drug rehabilitation programs.
