20th Annual International Harm Reduction Conference

"Harm Reduction and Human Rights"

April 20 - 23

Bangkok

There are only a few weeks left now until Harm Reduction 2009 opens in Bangkok, Thailand on Monday 20th April!

 Highlights from the programme (which is available to download from www.ihraconferences.net) include:

·        An opening address by Professor Michel Kazatchkine, the Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

·        Plenary Sessions on HIV and injecting drug use in Asia, harm reduction and human rights, and methamphetamine – including presentations from the UN Special Rapporteurs on the Right to Health and on Torture.

·        Major Sessions organised by the Open Society Institute, UNODC, World Health Organization, the International Network of People who Use Drugs, and the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development.

·        Regional sessions on harm reduction in Thailand and in Asia – including methamphetamine use, drug user organising, decriminalisation, and alcohol.

·        A lunchtime session by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria on 'Scaling Up Harm Reduction'.

·        A lunchtime lecture from Dr. Ethan Nadelmann (Executive Director of the Drug Policy Alliance) on Obama and the future for drug policy in the USA.

·        A film festival showcasing around 30 of the best productions from around the world

·        Interactive workshops on building drug user networks, implementing peer-driven interventions, tuberculosis treatment, positive deviance studies, and pleasure.

There will be over 60 sessions this year with something on offer for all of our delegates. Over half of these sessions will also have translation into Thai. And don't forget the conference party on Wednesday 22nd April!

Delegates are advised to plan to arrive in Bangkok on Sunday 19th April in order to take advantage of early check-in, satellite events and a conference opening reception.

• Important information about medical services in Bangkok, including the importation of medication, methadone prescribing and other harm reduction services
• Information about visa applications for Thailand

Harm Reduction 2009 has support from every relevant UN agency – UNAIDS, UNDP, UNESCO, UNICEF, UNODC, the World Health Organization, and the Office for the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). It is also supported by the Asian Harm Reduction Network, Family Health International, the International AIDS Society, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, the International Network of People who Use Drugs, Korsang (Cambodia), Population Services International, and Recovering Nepal. Thai groups endorsing the event include the Thai Red Cross, the Raks Thai Foundation, and the Thai AIDS Treatment Action Group.
